People with good stories get a statue in Ghent. On Vrijdagmarkt square, for instance, there is Jacob Van Artevelde, who encouraged Ghent merchants to trade with the English against the wishes of the French. There are also non-historical statues, such as the squatting girls Pis, Lena and Luna, who flank Nestor, Ghent’s Manneke Pis. A silent plea for equal peeing rights?
