Sint-Pietersplein is not only the beating heart of the Arts Quarter, but also of Ghent’s student quarter. Here you will find the Book Tower, Ghent’s fourth tower, and the symbol of the knowledge accumulated in this university city. The other side of the square, Overpoortstraat, represents the temptation to which every student is exposed: it’s not easy to resist the lure of the numerous student cafés.

Sint-Pietersplein is the city’s square for large-scale events. Every year the Mid-Lent fun fair is organised here, as well as many other events and concerts.

Since 2007 you can park your car at the underground car park. Many important archaeological finds were made during its construction, which are now symbolically indicated by narrow metal lines. You can admire the finds at the St Peter’s Abbey.

On the square there is a monumental staircase that connects the Sint-Pietersplein with the Sint-Amandsplein. The square and its surroundings, including several rows of houses and the Sint-Amandsplein, are classified as a conservation area.
