The provincial government building is located on the historic site of the former Leopoldskazerne barracks. The province of East Flanders is governed from this administrative headquarters.

The first stone of this building was laid in 1678 by Louis XIV's troops to defend the city. The building, which had a military use for many years, has now been renovated and modernised into an open and lively city quarter. Today, the Provincial Government Building is a meeting place for employees, trainees, visitors and residents of the Leopoldskazerne barracks.

Its location in the Arts Quarter makes it an ideal base for visiting the art museums MSK and S.M.A.K., the Citadelpark or the Bijloke site.
