This autumn, Europalia focuses on Georgia. The Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art (S.M.A.K.) organises the first solo exhibition of Georgian artist Karlo Kacharava (1964 – 1994) in a museum outside Georgia. Kacharava was born in a time when Georgia was part of the Soviet Union and died only a few years after his country had gained independence. This is reflected in his art. Despite only reaching the age of thirty, he has left a permanent mark on Georgia. He has inspired an entire new generation of local artists who live in a vibrant cultural scene.
His oeuvre includes numerous paintings, works on paper, illustrated diaries, poetry, art reviews and cultural comments. And last but not least: the impact of his unique style which heralded a new wave of Georgian avant-garde expression. This exhibition allows the general public to discover Kacharava's "inventive visual world". The museum invites a younger generation of Georgian artists to engage in a dialogue with his oeuvre.
