Historisch centrum/Torens-site
Pending the reconstruction of Korenmarkt and Emile Braunplein (KoBra project), archaeological excavation work is being carried out in Braunplein. The archaeologists plan to study the subsoil of the green park, the spot where Klokke Roeland and the Minne sculptures stand. The contractor has already removed the monuments for this purpose.
Georges Minne’s ‘Fountain of Kneeling Youths’ is being restored and is temporarily housed in the Museum of Fine Arts. After the redesign of Braunplein, the sculpture will return to a site in the city park.
Klokke Roeland will return too, but high above the ground in the carillon of the Belfry tower. This was decided some time ago, and enshrined in an agreement with the Flemish Government. The original intention was to bring down the Michiels tolling bell currently hanging in the Belfry and display it in a renovated Braunplein. It would then be replaced by a new tolling bell. That bell, the Mathildis, has now been cast but its ten-tonne weight prevents it from being installed in the carillon for the time being. The authorities are currently considering whether to display the Mathildis in the renovated square until it can be hoisted into the tower.
