This exhibition will be held as part of the Maeterlinck year, which takes place from 22 October 2011 till 28 April 2012.
George Minne and Maurice Maeterlinck were “symmetrical minds” who were considered innovators in the international art circles of their time. This exhibition illustrates the artistic exchanges between Maurice Maeterlinck and expressive artist George Minne. The artists joined forces at the beginning of their careers (Minne illustrated Maeterlinck’s first collection of poems, Serres chaudes) and they had a great influence on each other’s artistic choices.

This exhibition will be held as part of the Maeterlinck year, which takes place from 22 October 2011 till 28 April 2012.
The blue bird (L'Oiseau bleu) evokes the philosophical fairytale by Maurice Maeterlinck that goes by the same name. With a light touch, this exhibition takes visitors to the supernatural and mysterious dream world of Tyltyl and Mytyl. Led by Bérylune, a fairy, they wander around the land of memories. Their task is to find the untouchable Blue Bird, which symbolises fortune. The blue bird (L'Oiseau bleu) is a curious story with many layers, that ranges from a magical fairytale to deep considerations about man and his fate.

This double exhibition focuses on the various views and convictions about children and education which have arisen throughout history and recently. The exhibition illustrates how strongly the approaches and expectations towards children and youngsters can differ, as well as the birth of child psychiatry: how have politicians, physicians and educators protected and helped children in danger?
The second part of this double exhibition will be held at the Lokettenzaal of the Flemish Parliament, from mid-October 2011 till the end of December 2012.

Hybrid opera held in the framework of the Maeterlinck year, which takes place from 22 October 2011 till 28 April 2012.
The storyline: twelve blind people are on an island, with a priest as their guide. After a while, it turns out the priest has died. All the blind can do, is wait for death. Les Aveugles is a dark meditation about human existence. The music was composed by young Flemish composer Daan Janssens. The setting was created by internationally renowned visual artist and playwright Patrick Corillon. This is a “hybrid” opera, a creation which combines various techniques and approaches to share the basic concept of the play – the way humans perceive their fate – with the audience.

Maeterlink’s oeuvre was a huge source of inspiration for contemporary composers and even after his death a lot of composers wrote music to his poetry and plays. More than eighty composers were inspired by his oeuvre, making Maeterlinck by far the most inspiring author in music history. Music Centre De Bijloke Ghent wants to highlight this remarkable cultural and historical fact linked to the city of Ghent.

Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893) is sometimes considered the most eccentric English Pre-Raphaelite. He was one of the main representatives of the British movement, which combined a socially committed modernism with an interest in medieval art and religious traditions. Brown painted phenomenal landscapes, lively portraits and vivid historical scenes, which surprise the onlooker with their originality. The exhibition in Ghent showcases not only his works, but also those of his Belgian contemporaries.

In 2012 Ghent is honouring its reputation as a city of culture more than ever before. From May to September, TRACK is tracing a new trail through the city: 30 international artists are collaborating with people and organisations from the city to bring you a unique exhibition project. TRACK will take you through neighbourhoods and streets, buildings and squares, and show you contemporary art: not simply 30 images, but projects with a unique reason of being, a surprising history, a hidden story or, in any case, an intense relationship with the city. Ghent’s many museums and cultural institutions have joined the initiative to create an interesting cross-fertilisation and a vast activities programme.
The trail will consist of six clusters in the city.
