A person who commits a crime but who is not considered mentally capable can be interned for lack of accountability. This is a luck-of-the-draw system, it functions like a kind of limbo and it is one of the failures of psychiatry. Motivated by the gravity of this social issue and even more so by the personal drama of the individuals who undergo this internment, the Ghent-based photographer Lieven Nollet set out on a journey. He spoke to people who were interned in various Belgian prisons and in psychiatric centres that have special wings for prisoners. Nollet portrayed these people in his photographs, which capture the essence of their personal drama. Innocent, yet punished is a poignant series of photographs and testimonies: a surprising confrontation with the visible and the invisible.

The French Sun King, Louis XIV, inherited the orchestra ‘Les 24 Violons’ from his father. The king’s 24 violins are brought back to life again by Skip Sempe and Capriccio Stravagante using exact copies of the Sun King’s original violins. French grandeur on stage, of course, with music by such composers as Lully and Marais!

In the work of Ghent artist, Stijn Cole (b. 1978), the emphasis is on the abstraction of reality. The perception of this reality takes on a universal and conceptual value. The relation between spectator/work of art and the surroundings play an important role. Using new technological means Stijn Cole examines whether it is possible to visibly register time and light. The outcome exceeds formal beauty.

For over 40 years Piet Stockmans (°1940) has cherished every aspect of the medium that is porcelain: he designs industrially manufactured tableware, crafts traditional objects and creates artistic installations. His work blends form and content thanks to repetition, which plays an important role in this. The repetitive aspect that is typical of the industrial process thus is translated into an artistic means of expression in his work.

Jasper Morrison and Naoto Fukasawa, the curators of the exhibition, asked themselves the question why so many designs fail to pass the test of everyday use. Why does “Normal” disappear and when it is gone, how can we replace it? Is beauty only a matter of appearance or looks or is there more to it? How is it that some designs are considered strong designs and that others improve over the years?

Long before mankind came along, the earth was home to a diversity of animals and plants. The ancestors of the modern-day species shared the world with the dinosaurs. This exhibition not only offers an overview of the development of plants, but also the ways in which plants can adapt to extremely diverse climatological circumstances. You will be introduced to inhabitants of parched deserts, rugged expanses of stone and humid rainforests. (the exhibition is in Dutch, guided tours available upon request in English and Spanish.)

In recent years the City of Ghent has invested heavily in scenic lighting for the city centre. The Ghent lighting plan has also received international awards. The Light Festival wishes to highlight this lighting plan and give visitors the opportunity to catch a glimpse of Ghent’s unique hidden charm.
So take a winter tour of the city centre and experience the most surprising light experiences as you explore the city’s streets. A subtle play of light, which is reflected off the water’s surface, unexpected projections on buildings, poetic shadows which play in the twilight among Ghent’s hidden treasures. Twenty international renowned artists and light designers will take you on a tour of the historic city centre during the darkest days of the year. The work of artists who play with light is on display in several unique locations, both inside and outside.
A shuttle service will be laid on (bus, boat, bicycle) between the city museum and the Light Festival’s trail so that a combined visit of the exhibition, ‘Belichte stad, dag en nacht in Gent’ (Light of the city, day and night in Ghent) and the Light Festival is possible.

It is a well-known fact that James Ensor (1860-1949) was one of the pioneers who paved the way for modern art. During his lifetime his home in Ostend was a haven for artists and intellectuals. Two museums, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art, have joined forces to examine the relationship between James Ensor’s visionary art and the artistic practice of a host of contemporary artists in the exhibition, “Hareng saur – Ensor and contemporary art”.
