Can unknown cantatas by a forgotten composer really be worth sacrificing your Sunday morning for? You be the judge: Florian Heyerick plucked two gems from the teetering pile of 1418 church cantatas by Christoph Graupner, a celebrated contemporary of Bach. An enthusiastic mix of renowned musicians and young talent have a spirited go at doing it justice. Top it off with a delectable brunch at the Bijloke Bistro.

Frenzied, zigzagging, hard-edged. Poetic and explosive. The music of Sclavis is not easy to define. Listeners who come to hear the man who is likely the most fascinating composer and musician currently working in contemporary jazz are in for a joyride through many musical worlds. Besides being a committed philosopher, publicist and opinion maker, Jaap Kruithof (1929–2009) was also a passionate collector. For over twenty years, he collected objects that to him symbolised life. Enough to fill a museum, the Museum Primrose to be specific, that can be viewed as an expression of Kruithof's unrelenting crusade against western consumerism.
When the exhibition ends, the collection will be relocated to the MAS (Museum aan de Stroom) in Antwerp, its new permanent location.

Meet the Willis, vengeful spirits of betrayed maidens who make men dance until they drop, dead. For many ballerinas, dancing Giselle is a quest, a goal in itself, because it demands the utmost of the dancer, both technically and artistically. This new festival focuses on the versatility of contemporary music. Improvisation and creation are important mainstays of the Jazz & Sounds Festival combining the interaction from and to jazz, contemporary, classical, alternative rock, electronic music, improvised music, non-western music and more. The festival offers not linear but an organic whole of concerts per day, where several concerts and performances can coincide. Visitors will have to make choices within the programme or will be guided by the surprise of the moment.

One of the most frequently performed operas in the world, a true classic, in other words. The Puccini inimitably depicts the unfettered ways of the affluent yet emotionally impoverished protagonists in the Quartier Latin of early 20th century Paris. The Belarusian director Isaakin uses the work as a vehicle for subtle commentary on the contemporary consumer society.
Sung in Italian, with Dutch overhead titles.

The piano quartet Opus 34 by Brahms is a “symphony in disguise”. The only piano quartet that Shostakovich ever wrote (commissioned by the Beethoven Quartett in 1940) instantly became his most successful composition at the time. Together, they form a perfect introduction to the mission of the brand-new ‘Arsis4’, the new guise of Bl!ndman [strings]: to illustrate the tremendous diversity of 20th and 21st century music.

The Flemish Opera transports you to 19th century Russia. The intelligent, but emotionally ill-adjusted Onegin inflames the heart of the dreamy Tatiana only to then shatter it. Like no other, Tchaikovsky is able to translate the constantly shifting moods of Pushkin’s intimate opera, performed here conducted by the young Russian Dmitri Jurowski.

At the request of Alain Platel, the saxophonist Fabrizio Cassol (a.k.a. Moon) sunk his teeth into the Matthaus Passion, injecting it with jazz structures and even Latin influences. Now he demonstrates that the results hold up even without choreography, thanks to top musicians such as flautist Magic Malik and violinist Tcha Limberger, and the magical voices of Serge Kakudji and Christina Zavalloni. An emotional masterpiece.

In ancient Egypt, love blossoms between the general Radames and the Ethiopian slave Aïda, but the Egyptian princess Amneris attempts to thwart them. Amonasro – the Ethiopian king and the father of Aïda– is taken prisoner after Egypt conquers Ethiopia. However, the love of the Egyptian Radames for the Ethiopian slave Aïda leads him to reveal the military strategy to her, for which he pays with his life. Aïda follows him in death and in this way, they die close to one another. For the opera Aïda, Verdi composed highly emotional and intimate music. The triumphal scene remains the immortal climax of this opera.

Even for a hero of antiquity, a sharp woman can be a handful, and two, one too many. Giasone – Jason –, the leader of the Argonauts, who sailed for Kolchis to capture the Golden fleece, with its gift of absolute power and eternal life, finds solace in the arms of Medea. But not without ulterior motive: he is banking on the magical powers of this fascinating queen of Kolchis. As a gift in exchange for his promise to be faithful, Medea gives Giasone a magical ring with which he is able to kill the guardian of the Golden fleece, a terrible dragon.

Long before mankind came along, the earth was home to a diversity of animals and plants. The ancestors of the modern-day species shared the world with the dinosaurs. This exhibition not only offers an overview of the development of plants, but also the ways in which plants can adapt to extremely diverse climatological circumstances. You will be introduced to inhabitants of parched deserts, rugged expanses of stone and humid rainforests. (the exhibition is in Dutch, guided tours available upon request in English and Spanish.)
