Ghent organised its first Light Festival this winter, from 27 till 29 January 2011. According to some sources, the event attracted as many as 200,000 curious visitors to the Ghent city centre. This unforeseen success confirms the city’s reputation as 'City of Light' in Flanders once and for all.
For three days, from sunset till midnight, visitors admired the lighting artworks created by twenty international artists along the 5-km trail. Michael Langeder’s 'The big fire of Ghent that never happened' was the absolute must-see: a simulation of a fire at the Belfry, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The projection 'On dirait que…' by Spectaculaires on the façade of the Post Plaza building at the refurbished Korenmarkt also received a great deal of attention. However, there were also more poetic works, like 'NEUTRINOS3' by Peter Missotten and '[3MILLELUCES]' by Sophie Guyot at hotel D’Haene-Steenhuyse.

The festival came to an end with 'Hier licht Gent', an interactive performance for which the inhabitants of Ghent had lent 800 nightlights. They were displayed to form the words 'Hier licht Gent' (Here lights Ghent) at Sint-Baafsplein. Consequently, from up above, Ghent could clearly be seen as a bright spot.
The second edition of this event will most probably be organised in 2013.
