The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb has undergone a six-month conservation treatment. Patiently, specialists restored the masterpiece created by the Van Eyck brothers by reattaching the paint flakes which had come loose from the wooden panels of the altarpiece. This was done on site at St Bavo’s Cathedral. Only the panel of the “Just Judges”, a copy of the original, which was stolen in 1934, was restored at the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage in Brussels.
The upper part of the glass cage which holds the altarpiece was entirely sealed to better protect the painting against dust, humidity and temperature fluctuations.
This restoration will be followed by a thorough analysis of the painting. A comprehensive analysis of this masterpiece will be made through high-tech research using X-rays, infrared and UV beams. This should provide answers to questions like “Which brother painted which part?” and “Were the wooden panels all sawed from the same tree?”.
