The magnificent triptych, ‘The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’ in Ghent's St Bavo’s Cathedral will be given a facelift from 19 April until mid-November. Art lovers can still visit this masterpiece by the Van Eyck brothers during the restoration process and thus follow the work of the restorers.
The last restoration of the Mystic Lamb took place in 1951 but most of the panels of the triptych are still in good condition. The copy of the panel of the Just Judges, which was painted in 1941, ironically is the worst off. The paint is peeling off slightly and needs to be restored. Next to this, all the other panels will be gently dusted and where necessary restored. The experts will also take advantage of this opportunity to use all the latest techniques to examine the panels.
This will take a few months and will have consequences for visitors: they can still visit the Villa Chapel but have to remain behind a glass partition. Visitors can follow the restoration process and will be given information about the methods and techniques used. A unique opportunity for art lovers!
Audio guides are available from the desk near the reproduction of the triptych in the Vijd Chapel. This reproduction can be visited from 13 April, against payment.
