In February we announced that the works in Veldstraat had been postponed. Since then the road works in Veldstraat started on 15 March.
The City of Ghent, Flemish transport company De Lijn and TMVW are jointly renovating Korenmarkt, Emile Braunplein, Belfortstraat and the surrounding area. This project has been named KoBra and will also cover part of Veldstraat. Only the first section of Veldstraat, from Cataloniëstraat to Nodenaysteeg, will be resurfaced in view of the new tram stop. The works will last approximately six weeks.
As is the case in Korenmarkt, the tracks will already have been integrated in prefabricated track panels. These are large panels in which the tracks and the road surface have already been incorporated. The panels are constructed elsewhere. Thanks to this technique the works onsite will take less time.
The City of Ghent and the contractor are doing everything possible to limit the nuisance during the works to a minimum. Shops, pubs and restaurants will remain accessible to pedestrians during the works. No motor vehicles will be allowed in Veldstraat for the duration of the works.
Important news about the KoBra-construction: the city of Ghent and De Lijn have jointly developed a special brochure for tourists and residents featuring recommended travel routes to the historical centre during the construction work. Along with this brochure, tourists will be offered a handy shoe polishing kit as a free gift!
The brochure is available free of charge at the following locations:
